The end of my summer at the Pike County Express

reecedunker

Eight weeks goes pretty fast when you love what you are doing or however that saying goes. When I finished up my classes at the University of Kansas, I was in need of an internship and little did I know, one of the best could be found in Pittsfield.

When I reached out to Robin, she wasted no time getting me onboard and putting my college skills to work. Over these eight weeks, I’ve covered a little bit of everything. Now looking back at my work, it’s just dawned me that I did a lot of history related stories.

The transition from KU to the Pike County Express was a seamless one. I credit it a lot of that to the preparation I got in Lawrence, along with the professionalism shown at 129 N. Madison. Some of my first stories lacked a lot but I like to think over the course of these eight weeks that they improved.

Of all the work I did, I think my favorites were the Flood of 1993, the Pike County Military Heritage Museum, and the improvements being done on local cemeteries. That’s not to take away from any of the other stories, I wouldn’t have written them if I didn’t think the reader wouldn’t enjoy.

I can safely say, without even the slightest doubt, the toughest story I worked on was Tina and Ike Turner’s visit to Florence. That isn’t because I didn’t think it was interesting, but rather due to the lack of information that exists. It felt like trying to put a puzzle together, but the pieces didn’t match up.

Then I can’t wrap all of this up without mentioning the time I spent covering slow pitch softball at the lake. I enjoyed being there and taking pictures, but to be totally honest, I got a little jealous that I wasn’t on the field playing.

Before I finish up with what’s next for me, I think it’s important to thank the entire staff at the Pike County Express. They embraced me with open arms from day one and were always willing to answer my questions, no matter how big or small.

They’ve got a lot of big projects coming up with fair season about to get into full gear and fall sports rapidly approaching. Stay tuned for some great coverage of those!

You might ask, what’s next for me if I’m not sticking around at the Express? Well, it’s simple, I’m not leaving the area, at least just yet.

To be completely truthful, I’m not completely sure what I’ll be doing. Hopefully it involves sticking around in the Journalism industry but only time will tell.

I do plan on getting my master’s degree after a semester or two break. Whether that be at the University of Kansas or somewhere else, I haven’t made that decision yet.

What I do know is that the work I did this summer and the connections I made will be ones that are vital for me down the road. This is just the beginning and I’m thankful that I got to share my writing with the readers of the Pike County Express.

If you ever need to get in contact with me, feel free to reach out to the Pike County Express and they’ll give you in contact with me.

Thanks for taking the time to read the stories I’ve written this summer, even if you didn’t find it too always be the most interesting!
